What can I expect from the first session?

From the first moment, the therapeutical conditions allow the patient to see and think about himself in new ways. From the very beginning one can feel the type of work that is going to take place during the therapeuthical sessions at the practice. Nevertheless, it usually takes several interviews to set the treatment.

During the first interview, the patient will meet the psychologist and will be able to say everything that he is thinking and what he thinks he needs help with. The patient will get the idea of how the sessions would be like, get to know the dynamic between patient and psychologist and get an idea of what is a psychotherapy.

What is psychotherapy?

Psychotherapy is a process started by the patient with the help of the psychologist to understand, little by little the different problems that trouble him/her. It helps the person have a better life quality because it helps change the different problems that repeat themselves in the patient’s lives and that are harmful for the person and the people around him.

Therapy helps the patient to get to know himself better and adjust the distance between what one wants and reality.

In children and adolescents, they will find themselves with better disposition to explore and bring out their potential, knowing their own wishes and adapting them to their reality at the same time of becoming more responsible of their behaviour.

Psychotherapy has a beginning and an end. The number of sessions depends on each person, their situation, their problems and what each person wants and needs.

What is psychoanalysis?

Psychoanalysis means “To analyze the mind”. It is a method, founded by Sigmund Freud, but that has been growing and evolving since then. This method helps people live better. It is centered in the mind and consists of exploring one’s inner self. By facing each one’s darkest corners, the person will be able to live more freely.

What is the difference between doing psychotherapy and psychoanalysis?

Going to psychotherapy and a going to psychoanalysis is different. The first and most important difference is the depth of the work that one can do. If a patient does psychotherapy, it will help, but the depth of getting to know one’s conflicts will be more superficial. For this reason, come the rest of the differences that are based on the way to reach that depth. The frequency of sessions, the use of a couch to lie down and the interaction of the patient and analyst are some differences.

Is everything I talk about in therapy confidential?

Completely, except for some exceptions:

  • When there is a risk of physical harm of the patient on himself or from the patient to others.
  • In case the psychologist suspects the child or adolescent could be suffering any kind of abuse.

In these cases, the psychologist is obliged to break the confidentiality clause, but he will always talk to the patient first and will inform him of the procedure.

When should I ask for help?

One should always consult when there are symptoms.

It’s important to consult a professional when one feels that something is becoming too hard, or when situations in life keep repeating themselves and escape one’s control. Emotional blockages, work crisis or artistic ones are common situations that take someone to ask for help.

If it’s a son or daughter, one should ask a professional in the same circumstances as adults: when there are signs that something is not ok, or if teachers or medical doctors suggest so.

How long is a therapy?

It depends on each person, on what the patient and psychologist have talked about during the interviews and the evolution of the patient.

It’s very important to have in mind that a therapy is a process that begins and ends. The end will come when both patient and psychologist talk about it and find an agreement.

How much does therapy cost?

The cost will vary, depending on the number of sessions and how long the treatment will be.
